My Gaming History

I’m a gamer. No if’s and’s or but’s about it. But unlike most gamers, I don’t really fit into a gaming category. Many gamers will say “yeah I’m a sports game guy so it’s still cool I play videogames” or “OMGZ0RZ \/\/0\/\/ 4TW!” or something along similar lines. However, my gaming allegiance isn’t so easy to identify.

As I talk about my gaming history and involvement with games, I’ll be listing the category of each game in parentheses in order to show my ever changing tastes. As you may already be able to tell by the length of this passage, gaming has been a big part of my life, whether it be solitary gaming for a little R&R, or chilling with the bros for a couple of rounds of Call of Duty.

I started with NES, and the only game at the time: Mario (RPG). I played a couple of others, then I moved on and saw the light of Sega Genesis. My favorite game was Battletoads & Double Dragon: The Ultimate Team (Action/Side scroller/Fighting). One of the main reasons for that was that it had Cooperative play: each person could choose to be one of the Double Dragons or one of the Battletoads. This really opened up my world of multiplayer gaming.

Next I moved onto the glorious Playstation. I played a variety of games on this console, but my two favorites were Final Fantasy Tactics (RPG) and ESPN Extreme Games (ESPNXG) (Racing/Sports). ESPNXG was one of my favorite games to play with my friends. We would race against each other down the hill on 1 of 4 vehicles (luge, bike, skateboard, rollerblades) and you could kick and punch each other if you got close enough.  Released shortly after PS1, I moved onto N64 and played Starfox64 (Aerial Combat/FPS), Zelda (RPG), Harvest Moon 64 (Farming Sim), and of course Bomberman 64 (Puzzle/Action) for some awesome multiplayer.

As the millennium came to an end, Dreamcast, Playstation 2, Xbox, Everquest (MMORPG) for PC and Pokemon Red and Blue (RPG) for Game Boy were released. Dreamcast held such great multiplayer games such as Powerstone (Fighting) and classics such as Sonic (RPG/Action). Playstation 2 had Dead or Alive 2 (Fighting), the Armored Core series (RPG/Action), God of War (Action), and too many others to list. On Xbox was everyone’s favorite, Halo (FPS) along with Call of Duty (FPS), Dance Dance Revolution (Dance), and Midnight Club Dub Edition (Racing).

In my recent history, I have played Dark Ages of Camelot (MMORPG), Vanguard: Saga of Heroes (MMORPG), City of Heroes (MMORPG), Diablo/Diablo 2 (Action RPG), Battlefield 1942/2142 (FPS), Counter Strike Source (FPS), Morrowind/Oblivion (RPG), and hundreds of others. But to top it all off, the game I’m stuck on right now is NHL08 (Sports).

As you can see, I don’t really have a particular gaming style. I also love single player games as much as multiplayer ones and while some people are interested in only one type of gaming genre, I haven’t ever found a genre that satisfies all my gaming wants. As a result, I’ve never stopped gaming. -Chris

  1. Seems that you are a well rounded gamer in your tastes and experiences. Good perspective when we discuss single versus multiplayer experiences.
